History

Trustees and Managing Committee have a dream to see that Shri Lohana Vidyarthi Bhavan – Andheri is rated as one of the best Institutions for the students of the Lohana Community in India.

  • It was decided to start the institute under the Presidentship of Rao Bahadur Sheth Karamshi Damji On 26th April, 1904.

    The institute started in a rental house at Bhuleshwar with only Seven Students on 20th July, 1904.

  • On 1st June, 1906, the institute was shifted to Matushri Kanbai Vadi with a rent of Rupee one and quarter p.m./p.a.

  • On demise of Sheth Damodardas Gordhandas Sukhadwala, the Institute got a donation of Rupees Ten Thousand as per his will.

  • Trustees of Matushri Kanbai allowed the Institute to use the first floor of their building with a nominal rent.

  • Sheth Damodardas Bhagwandas Mavani donated Rs. 25,000/- on 13th Feb, 1928, so his name was also added with the Institution.

  • Sheth Durlabhdas Mavani gave donation for arranging snacks for students in the memory of Sheth Damodardas Odhavaji.

  • Donation of Rs. 40,000/- was received from Sheth Durlabhdas Mavani hence his name was added with the name of Institution.

  • “Motibaug” at Andheri was purchased for Rs 82,586/-. Rs 62,000/- were given by “Sheth Motibhai Karmshi Building Fund” and Rs. 20,586/- were given from the savings of Institution.

  • On 7th March,1954 Students were shifted to “Motibag” Andheri.

  • 1. Inauguration function of “Motibaug” was held on 25th February, 1956 by Sheth Shri Devkaran Nenshibhai Tanna and First meeting of “Past and Present Students Union” was held under the Presidentship of Sheth Shri Chimanlal Hargovindas Vajani.

    2. “Golden Jubliee” of the institution was held under the Presidentship of Sheth Shri Khataubhai Mavjibhai Shethia in Sir Kavasji Jahangir Hall.

  • The old building at Kandawadi was returned back to Trustees of Matushri Kanbai Trust.

  • Income Tax Certificate was obtained so that donation of Rs 250/- and above can be exempted from Income Tax.

  • Foundation stone of ‘B’ building of Lohana Vidhyarthi Bhavan - Andheri was laid by Shri Kalyanji Kanji Rajpopat and his wife Smt Mevaben Popat on 26th Janury, 1967.

  • During the “Diamond Jubilee” Function a donation of Rupees 4,00,000 was collected just in an hour. The new “B” building was given to “Sanskar Jyot Trust” to start a Gujarati Medium School and thus “Sanskar Jyot School” started in the campus of Shree Lohana Vidyarthi Bhavan - Andheri.

  • As the main building ‘A’ was ready, its inauguration ceremony was held on ‘Ramnavmi’ by the well-known Solicitor of our community Shri Jasvantbhai Thakkar and his wife Shrimati Naliniben Thakkar.

  • The property at Dahanu was sold for Rs 51,000/- and construction of Second Floor of building ‘A’ started.

  • Ground floor of ‘B’ building was given to ‘Bank of Maharashtra’ on monthly lease of Rs 29,000/-. Bank agreed to pay municipal tax, light bills and water charges.

  • Correspondence was going on with Bank of Maharashtra Bank for increasing the lease amount. With the result Bank paid difference of Rs. 20 lacs, Rs 15 lacs were put in Fixed Deposits in the said bank.

  • Additional 10 rooms were constructed on the Third Floor of Building “A” to admit Junior College students. Donation of Rs 1,51,000/- per room was received from the well wishers and donors.

    Donation of Rs 5,00,000/- was received from Shri Ashokbhai Babubhai Thakkar for the Library where 40 students could sit and read.

  • Centenary Function of Shree Lohana Vidyarthi Bhavan- Andheri was celebrated on 31st October, 2004. “SOPAN” the book giving the details of the Institution , its trustee and students was released on this day. Shri Dhirendra Nagji Kalidas Mehta and Param Poojya Shri Haribhai Kothari were the main speakers on the occassion and Shri Maganbhai Nanjibhai Savani was the Chief guest for the function. All the arrangements for the function were looked after by Shri Dwirekbhai Raj (Organiser) and Dr R. G. Jimulia (President During the period. )

    A program of Past and Present Students was organized under the Presidentship of Shri Pravinbhai Mashru The association promised to bear the expenses of the Centenary function and donated a sum of Rs. 5 lakh after the function.

Shree Lohana Vidyarthi Bhavan Andheri - Today

Shree Lohana Vidyarthi Bhavan - Andheri of today is due to the efforts of the past Presidents like Shri Dwirekbhai Raj, Late Shri Dhirubhai Vasani, Dr. R G Jimulia, Shri Pravinbhai Mashru and Shri Rameshbhai Vasani. Efforts are still going on to make it an ideal Institution for the students of the Lohana Community.

Administration

The committee consist of 34 members (17 trustees and 17 Managing Committee members). The office bearers looks after the day to day administration of the Institution. Out of the 17 trustees 8 are donor trustees and out of 34 members 8 are the past students of the Institution.

Office bearers include the President, Vice President, Two Secretaries and Two Treasurers.

A meeting of all the trustees and other members is held every three months and all the decisions are taken jointly and unanimously.

Office bearers meet once a week on every Saturday. They have distributed the work amongst themselves as –

  1. One person looks after all the correspondences and preparing the letters.
  2. To look and ask for quotation check then and after security place order and see the payments made.
  3. To see the accounts and cash and cheque vouchers, income tax audit, assets etc.
  4. To look after sports requirements and make students participate at all levels.
  5. To prepare minutes of all the meeting held and send to the members
  6. To see that kitchen and dining hall are properly maintained. To check the grocery and food items etc.
When the office bearers meet each bearer gives the report of the work that has been carried out and further course of action is decided.

Before the meeting on Saturday all office bearers go to different floors for inspection of the students in their rooms, floor monitor reports about their demand/requirements if any to the office bearers.

Admission of Students

We admit students in 11th and in the First Year of Degree College. Criteria (%) of admission are decided after scrutinizing the forms mostly we restrict to 80% for 11th and 75% for Degree College. We do consider students from low income group or parent less or with one parent separately and admit them even with lower marks. As far as possible we avoid admission to others classes for new students.

Four students share a room. They are given a bed, mattress , pillow, 2 bed sheets, 2 pillow covers, one sheet to cover themselves, table, chair, shelf and a cupboard.

Arrangement for a Dhobi has been made to wash and iron their garments of the Students.

Tea and Coffee are severed to those who require. We provide two meals – Lunch and Dinner. A committee of students sits with maharaj, Superintendent, Student Representative and a office bearer and decide the menu and accordingly meals are prepared.

There is Reading Hall on 3rd floor where 40 students can sit and read.

English and Gujarati news papers are kept on the stand on the ground floor.

For drinking water we have water cooler and purifier. Hot water for bath is provided through solar heaters installed on the terrace. On each floor there are eight toilet blocks and eight bathrooms.

Sports facilities are given for Outdoor and Indoor Sports. They play Cricket, Football, Volley Ball, Tennis, Carom, Chess, Table Tennis, etc., The students participate in various Competitions and win prizes and trophies. One of our student was ranked 2nd in all India in chess.

Results Scholarship Educational Help

Since last 15 years our results of 12th and Final year (T.Y) has been 100%. All the students of 12th are mostly in First class (above 60%) with higher side of 84-90%.

Every year we give the prizes to the students who get First, Second or Third rank holder of each class from the hostel.

We also select the “Best Student of the Year” by looking at the all round performance .

A special prize is given to the students who passes with highest marks from the hostel. In CA examination in 2014 one of our students Shri Manav Thakkrar got the 35th rank at all India level.

We give education help to needy boys and girls students of our community. This year we gave Students of LVB about Rs. 6,40,000/-
Outsiders Male and Female Rs. 18,20,000

Amongst outsider 47 are Girl students and 76 are boy students.

At present there are 36 (11th + 12th) junior college students and 136 degree college students. Our fees are Rs 25,000/- per annum which includes meals also. We have

Online Admission and Scholarship

In view of the pandemic and to facilitate our students we took an opportunity to digitalise our admissions and scholarship process. Students can now fill and submit the forms online and get updated on the process via e-mail.

We have also leveraged the database we have created to give an option to students to fill their forms using their previously submitted forms. We aim to reduced usage of paper and digitalise additional processes like leave application forms, admission fee payments, etc in the near future.

Others Activities

Our Students install Idol of Lord Ganesha every year for 10 days. They do Pooja-Aarti-Prasad both in the Morning and Evening.

Every year the Students organize a Inter Hostel fest named “Revolution” in the month of December. They organize group discussion seminars, elocution competition, cultural programs, Dayro, Sports etc. It is totally managed by students themselves.
